The IOM recommends: Underweight (BMI < 18.5): 12.5-18 kg (28-40 lbs). Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9): 11.5-16 kg (25-35 lbs). Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): 7-11.5 kg (15-25 lbs). Obese (BMI โ‰ฅ 30): 5-9 kg (11-20 lbs).
When does most pregnancy weight gain happen?
Most weight gain occurs in the second and third trimesters. In the first trimester, expect 0.5-2 kg (1-4 lbs) total. From the second trimester onwards, expect roughly 0.4-0.5 kg (about 1 lb) per week for normal-weight women.
What does pregnancy weight gain consist of?
Baby: 3-4 kg. Placenta: 0.5-1 kg. Amniotic fluid: 1 kg. Uterus growth: 1 kg. Increased blood volume: 1.5-2 kg. Breast tissue: 0.5-1 kg. Fat stores for breastfeeding: 2-4 kg. Increased fluid: 1-2 kg.
Is it safe to lose weight during pregnancy?
Intentional weight loss during pregnancy is generally not recommended. If you are overweight or obese, your provider may recommend slower weight gain rather than weight loss. Always follow your healthcare provider's personalised guidance.
