How period calculation works

Your menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. The average cycle is 28 days, but cycles anywhere from 21 to 45 days are considered normal.

Next period: Calculated by adding your average cycle length to the first day of your last period.

Ovulation: Estimated to occur 14 days before your next period starts. This is based on the luteal phase, which is relatively consistent at about 14 days for most women.

Fertile window: Spans from 5 days before ovulation to 1 day after. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so the fertile window begins before ovulation occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my next period calculated?
Your next period is estimated by adding your average cycle length (in days) to the first day of your last period. The average cycle length is 28 days, but normal cycles range from 21 to 35 days.
What is a normal menstrual cycle length?
Normal menstrual cycles range from 21 to 35 days, with the average being 28 days. Cycles can vary from month to month. Consistently irregular cycles should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
When is my fertile window?
Your fertile window is typically the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before your next expected period, not 14 days after your last period started.
Can stress affect my cycle?
Yes. Stress, significant weight changes, intense exercise, illness, and travel can all affect your menstrual cycle timing. This calculator provides estimates based on your average cycle โ€” actual dates may vary.
